Letter: Bridge Hill view much better since detour

To the editor:

Has anyone noticed that since the detour has been put in place on Highway 97 at Bridge Hill that the view is a lot better than usual? Several billboards have been removed.

Enjoy it while you can as I’d bet that once the underpass is completed and the detour is dismantled, the billboards will probably be replaced.

Related: I harbour a hope that the obstruction of the (potentially) excellent view seen by the in-patients of the new WFN healthcare facility might prompt a complaint by those patients and visitors and that this might prompt reconsideration of the rental of that space for mere billboards. It might not be earning anyone any money but the view is actually priceless.

Some constructive public relations on the part of WFN, the owner of the signs, and the businesses that rent the space (eg. contributing some of their revenue to a charity) would go a long way toward mitigating the bad feelings that the population has as a result of the ridiculous eyesore that these billboards present. It is embarrassing to have to explain to visitors, tourists, etc., that they have more regard for earning money than to that which brought the tourists here (to spend their money and thereby support one of our very important industries—tourism).
