Letter: Canada Day Concert echos with community spirit
The 20th anniversary Canada Day Spectacular Concert on July 1 in Prospera Place was fantastic. An engaging mix of light classical and popular music performed under the baton of maestro Leonard Camplin, conductor laureate of the Okanagan Symphony Orchestra.
Our beautiful Okanagan Valley is full of musical talent; our guest artists, Louise Boisvert, Melina Moore and Paul Moore are all resident here. Being able to showcase the aptitude of our Young Artist Competition winners and give them the opportunity to perform with the backing of a full Symphony Orchestra meets the society’s aim of advancing the public’s appreciation of the arts and the furtherance of musical education for youth.
The concert presentation of this free family concert relies on the volunteer work of so many people.
I would like, on behalf of the board of The Kelowna Canada Day Concerts Society, to thank all those involved; The team of front of house hostesses, The Community Musicians and student musicians who volunteered their time and paid their own way to be a part of the Kelowna Pops Orchestra; The billets who kindly housed musicians from all over BC (and even some from the States) and those who helped to publicize this superb concert.
We offer a big vote of thanks to our MC’s, Duane English and Wesla Wong for ably standing in for Mike Roberts this year.
Community spirit is so important to the successful presentation of The Canada Day Spectacular Concert and our thanks go to all above and to others I may have omitted (a special mention to Stage Manager Tim Watson for his efficiency and attention to detail.)
Our funding comes from a variety of sources; advertisements, donations, sponsorship and grants from Federal – Heritage Canada, Provincial – BC Gaming and Municipal governments. We were delighted to have representatives from all three levels of Government at the Concert; M.P The Honourable Ron Cannon, MLA Norm Letnick, MLA Steve Thomson and Deputy Mayor Maxine Dehart.
I believe that a good time was had by all.
