Mustangs second at home tourney
A second-place showing at their own tournament is further proof that the Immaculata Mustangs senior girls basketball team continues to improve as the 2010-11 season progresses.
Only a powerful Prairie Christian Academy team—the No. 2 ranked AA team from Alberta—proved better as they defeated the Mustangs 79-45 in the final of the Immaculata Invitational on Saturday night.
“(Prairie Christian) were full value for the win,” said Mustangs coach John Campbell.
“They have it all: size, outside shooting, speed and haven’t lost in 2011.”
The Mustangs reached the final thanks to wins in their first two games of the tournament—54-45 win over Langley Christian and 61-39 over St. Ann’s.
The Mustangs have come a long way since finishing in last place at the Rutland girls tournament in December.
“I am very proud of the girls as they have worked very hard and their hard work is starting to pay off,” said Campbell.
“Eight of the 12 team members are in Grade 10 so we are very young and inexperienced with solid leadership from our seniors. They are very teachable and athletic, making them a real pleasure to coach.”
The OKM Huskies finished fourth, while Rutland took fifth.
The Mustangs are preparing for the Okanagan Valley A Championship in two weeks in Ashcroft.
