OC Baseball Opens Exhibition Season on the Road
The Okanagan College Coyotes will be tossing out the first pitch on their fall exhibition schedule as they travel to Nanaimo this weekend to play six games over three days.
The Coyotes will play three double-headers with the Vancouver Island Baseball Institute Mariners as they take what they have learned in the past few weeks of practice onto the ball diamond.
Thirty players from OC departed early this morning en route to Vancouver Island where they will play two games later today, as well as two each on Saturday and Sunday.
The Coyotes have 30 players on its fall roster and VIBI has 37. VIBI returns the favor playing in Kelowna September 30, October 1 and 2.
OC sports a veteran lineup with some familiar faces and lots of newcomers.
Veterans include senior pitcher Pete Tollenaar, shortstop/1st baseman Garrett Wiesse and catcher Steffan Mckee.
Kelowna baseball product Mike Monster is back in uniform after two years away from the game and is eager to show he can return to be a dominant pitcher.
Among the newcomers are local pitcher Jeff May, who is fighting for a starting job after pitching for the Okanagan Athletics the past few seasons.
Another newcomer is outfielder Dustin Deeming who has CCBC experience as he spent his rookie season at Kwantlen College before they dropped their program. Ryan Elliot and PBL grad Brian Elias are also freshmen looking for playing time.
Next weekend the Coyotes will host their 2nd annual High School Classic Invitational Tournament, with PBL age teams from B.C. and Alberta competing for the Ray Stearns Memorial Trophy.
