Chiefs show heart in come from behind win
With a stretch of four straight road games approaching, the Kelowna Chiefs learned its never too late to get back into a hockey game.
Trailing Creston Valley 4-1 at the end of the second period on Saturday night at Rutland Arena and 5-3 in the game's final minute, the Chiefs found a way to tie the game and then win it in overtime, stunning the Thunder Cats with a 6-5 overtime win.
After Jordan Salahor and Brady Mende had cut Creston Valley's lead to two goals, the Chiefs completed the comeback in the dying seconds.
Bryce Koch scored with just 23 seconds to play to make the score 5-4 and with only two seconds remaining in the game, Koch tied the score and sent the it to overtime where Mitchell Barker would end the proceedings and give Kelowna a 6-5 win.
"It was just a matter of time, we were pretty dominant in the game," said Chiefs coach Ken Andrusiak. "It just happened to take till the final seconds to tie it."
The comeback win on Saturday came after a loss by the Chiefs on Sunday, as they dropped a 6-4 decision to Sicamous on Friday.
It was a confidence booster that showed his players that the game is never over, said Andrusiak.
"It gives them confidence because now we've comeback a couple times," he said. "It's one of those things you never know if you can do it until it happens. It's important to believe that you can do it and that the game is never over."
The Chiefs next four games will be on the road with the first stop in Osoyoos on Wednesday against a team that is three points ahead of Kelowna in their division.
"They have been one of the top teams for years and so you are always ready to go into Osoyoos and play them," said Andrusiak. "It's a good set up for the weekend. You want to go in with a positive attitude and knock them off. Our confidence level right now is pretty high."
The Chiefs head to Columbia and Valley on the weekend and will return home on Saturday Dec. 8 to face the Summerland Steam.
