Thistletown hosts boxing card next Saturday
Ten matches will take to the ring this Saturday, July 7 at the Sunplex Arena in Kelowna for the inaugural Summer Boxing Classic.
Hosted by the Thistletown Boxing Club, the amateur card features combatants as young as 10 and as old as the 55-plus category.
Thistletown head coach and manager Graham McIntosh is staging the event in hopes of raising the profile and awareness of amateur boxing in B.C.
"The idea behind this is to show the community the broad scope that amateur boxing covers," said McIntosh. "We have young boxers, older boxers, and female boxers on the card…it's to show that boxing is for everyone."
Three local boxers have bouts on Saturday. The main event will feature Thistletown's Austin Riggs (135 pounds, junior), while Curtis Anderson (110 pounds, junior), and Yokomoto Shingo (128 pounds, senior) will also step into the ring.
Jag Seerha from Prince George, a former national B team member, is also on the card.
Action begins at 7 p.m. at the Sunplex, located at 1155 Ellis St.
Tickets are $20 at the door, or $15 in advance from the Thistletown Boxing Club, the Sunplex or The Chippy Winger.
