Thompson Okanagan FC kicks off fall season
Thompson Okanagan Football Club teams were back in action last weekend, kicking off the fall session of the B.C. Soccer Premier League season with teams taking on Surrey United.
The TOFC's 97 girls had a back and forth match with Surrey as the team's played an evenly matched game last weekend that saw Surrey get the final goal of the game and a 3-2 win.
TOFC opened the scoring 16 minutes into the game on a perfectly executed through ball from Nikki Mainwaring (Kamloops) that allowed Emma Johnson (Kelowna) to outsprint the Surrey defence and slide the ball into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead that they held onto at the half.
In the second half, TOFC goalkeeper Joella Koblischke (Lake Country) made a number of confident stops which kept Surrey off the board until the 60th minute when Surrey tied the game 1-1. setting the stage for a tightly contested finish to the game.
Surrey went ahead 2-1 in the 70th minute but TOFC stormed back two minutes later with a great solo effort from Johnson who outpaced the Surrey backline and finished with a shot across the goalie low into the corner to tie the game 2-2.
Unfortunately for TOFC. Within four minutes however Surrey exploited some space out wide and scored on a ball into the box to make the final score 3-2 for Surrey.
U-13 Intake Girls
In the first league game for the TOFC U13 Intake Girls team, the team was up against a skilled Surrey United club that jumped out to a 1-0 lead and held that lead into half-time.
The TOFC girls came back strong in the second half putting a lot of pressure on Surrey. Ten minutes into the half, Stefanie Young (Kelowna) sent a through ball to Yvonne Manwaring (Kamloops) who took the ball from the half on a breakaway and skillfully dribbled left around the goalie, quickly finding the back of the net to tie up the game 1-1.
Sixteen minutes later, on a free kick from the Surrey corner, Young sent the ball into the penalty area. It was cleared by a Surrey defender only to have Sam Gerelle (Kelowna) return the ball back to Manwaring who spun and scored TOFCs’ 2nd goal and a 2-01 lead for Kelowna.
Surrey came back hard and with approximately four minutes remaining in the game, Surrey dribbled quickly by two of TOFCs’ defenders then skillfully beat the long reach of TOFC keeper Charlie Kampman (West Kelowna) to tie the game 2-2. Neither team was able to break the tie and the game ended 2-2.
