Productive road trip for Heat soccer squads
Both UBC Okanagan Heat soccer teams are back on the road this weekend as they head to the Lower Mainland for a pair of PACWEST games.
The UBCO women and men will visit Langara Saturday in Richmond, before heading to Squamish to face the Quest Kermodes on Sunday.
Both Heat teams are coming off a productive trip last weekend, as the women and men each earned a win and a draw.
On Saturday, the UBCO women and Kwantlen played to a 0-0 stalemate in Surrey.
A scrappy match meant lots of physical play at both ends of the turf, making it difficult for either team to get a foothold on the offense.
“It was a choppy game with no real flow to the match,” said Heat coach Claire Paterson after the game. “We created chances but it was unfortunate that we couldn’t convert them.”
Fourth-year keeper Christine Tallon (Kamloops) made her season debut against the Eagles after coming back from injury, notching her first shutout of the season.
On Sunday in Coquitlam, rookie Haylee Lakovic scored her first two goals in leading the Heat (3-0-1) to a 3-0 shutout of Douglas College.
"It was definitely a well fought match," said Lakovic. "It got very physical but we kept composed and we played how we know how to and came out with a well-deserved win."
Michelle Smith scored the other goal on a penalty kick, while Tallone earned a second clean sheet in as many days for undefeated UBCO.
Like the women, the UBCO men opened an unbeaten weekend with a 0-0 draw against Kwantlen.
A physical game resulted in very few quality chances on goal.
“It was just one of those away games,” Heat coach Dante Zanatta commented after the match. “We created chances and didn’t finish them. They defended quite well.”
Keeper Logan Ellis posted the shutout, while third-year defender Harrison Shrimpton was named Heat Man of the Match.
On Sunday, the Heat (2-1-1) earned their second win of the with a 3-0 decision over Douglas.
Logan Ellis posted his third straight shutout, as the Heat haven't allowed a goal since the 75th minute of their season opener against VIU.
Austin Jones, Logan Abbott and Enzo Paal scored UBCO's goals.
