Okanagan Rockets open MML season with sweep
On the whole, opening weekend wasn't picture perfect, but the Okanagan Rockets still launched the B.C. Major Midget League regular season on the right foot with a sweep of the Fraser Valley Thunderbirds.
In Saturday's 2013-14 season opener at CNC, the Rockets were firing on all cylinders in a 10-3 drubbing of the Thunderbirds. Liam Finlay paced the Rockets attack with a goal and three assists, while Tyson Jost (2g, 2a) and Jake Kryski (1g, 3a) had impressive MML debits with four points apiece.
On Sunday, Fraser Valley put up a considerably bigger fight before the Rockets emerged with a 6-5 win.
Veteran blue liner Gen Bryshun led the way offensively with a goal and two assists, while Josh Johnston notched his first MML goal.
Brendan Barry was in net for both Rockets victories, the first of which was far more impressive than the second, in the eyes of rookie head coach Mark O'Rourke.
"We were close to playing a full 60 minutes on Saturday and that was evident in the score…I think he guys played pretty well," said O'Rourke. "On Sunday, I don't know if the guys were too comfortable, but we definitely didn't play the first 40 minutes like we needed to. We won the game, but the consistency wasn't quite there. But it's early and that's something that's fixable."
The Rockets, last season's playoff runners-up to the Northwest Giants, will return to action this weekend as they head to Richmond for BCMML Showcase. The Rockets will play two games against the Valley West Hawks, who are also 2-0.
