Howes and Rush named Sun co-MVPs

A 2013 season which saw the Okanagan Sun post an 8-2 record and finish second in the BCFC, also featured its share of outstanding individual performances.

The club honoured its top achievers at the Sun's annual awards banquet Monday at the Coast Capri Hotel.

A pair of graduating players shared the team's MVP honours—receiver Tommy Howes and safety Jack Rush.

Howes, native of Winnipeg caught a single season team-record 58 passes in 2013, while the hard-hitting Rush, a product of Niagara Falls, Ont., grabbed four interceptions and made 33 tackles.

Here's a look at all the winners:

• Most valuable player—Tommy Howes (receiver) and Jack Rush (safety).

• Rookie of the Year – JT Fernandez (linebacker) and Theo Deezar (quarterback)

• Top Offensive Back – Alex Bradley (running back, second consecutive year)

• Top Receiver – Tommy Howes (receiver) (second consecutive year)

• Top Defensive Lineman – Jonas Gering and Zak Ironstand

•  Top Offensive Lineman – Devon Kozar

• Special Teams Player – Robbie Yochim (returner/defensive back)

• Top Defensive Back – Brennan Van Nistelrooy

• Top Linebacker – Brandon Donkers (second consecutive year)

• Most Popular Player (voted by the players) – Jack Rush (safety)

• Most Sportsmanlike Player – Chris Godin (defensive lineman)

• Most Inspirational Player – Geoff Ansell (offensive lineman)

• Most Improved Player – Triston Nwagwu (defensive back) and Landon King (defensive back)

• Okanagan Minor Football Grad Award – Michele Vecchio (offensive lineman)

• Scoring Leader – Thomas Huber (kicker/receiver)

The Sun will host the Langley Rams Sunday in the BCFC semi-final at the Apple Bowl.
