Additions to Apple Triathlon schedule
The 2014 Pushor Mitchell Apple Triathlon will offer a smorgasbord of top class triathlon events to satisfy the appetite of all ages, stages and abilities. Running consecutively for 32 years, this signature multi-sport event takes place during the weekend of Aug. 15 to 17 in Kelowna.
Speaking at this year's AGM, Kelowna Apple Triathlon Society (KATS) president Richard Montgomery announced some exciting changes.
"In addition to the Apple being a qualifying race for the 2015 ITU Age Group World Championships in Chicago by offering three qualifying Olympic and Sprint distance spots per age group and gender, it will also host three Elite races (Elite Sprint, Junior Elite Sprint and Elite Paratriathlete Sprint) as well as the B.C. Provincial Championships for the Junior Elite and Olympic distance Age Group events," Montgomery said. "It also includes the National U15 and Junior Elite Grand Final."
One of the main attractions of the Pushor Mitchell Apple Triathlon remains the Kids of Steel Races and Youth and Teen Camps.
"Another of our most popular events is our Try-a-Tri for novices, which has seen many nervous newbies conquer the swim-cycle-run event with flying colours," said Montgomery. "We would also like to see more contenders in our Business Challenge Sprint Relay, which offers families or organizations the opportunity to show who is really the toughest!" More details on the Olympic, Sprint, Aquathon, Fun Run, Open Water Swim, relay and other events are available on the website at www.appletriathlon.com
Montgomery added: "We have averaged between 1,200 to 1,800 participants over the years, and with close to 70 percent of these people from out-of-town, the economic value generated and contribution to the reputation of the City of Kelowna and the Okanagan Valley is tremendous."
KATS is a non-profit society. "This very successful weekend is only made possible through the dedication of our volunteer Board of Governors, executive directors and coordinators supported by approximately 1,000 volunteers who help out on the weekend. The media has also been a great supporter throughout the years. I cannot thank all of them enough,” mentioned Montgomery.
"We also offer excellent opportunities for sponsors to generate exposure to an active market and to make this year's Pushor Mitchell Apple Triathlon another spectacular event," said media spokesperson Jeanette Hoft.
