When it comes to combining athletic prowess and proficiency in their studies, Katy Klomps and Will Deck are at the head of the class.

The two 21-year-old athletes were recognized Tuesday night at the Heat's annual athletic awards banquet, as UBC Okanagan's female and male student-athletes of the year for 2013-14.

Klomps, a third-year middle blocker from Surrey helped lead the Heat women to a Canada West playoff spot for the second straight year, and a first-round playoff win over Brandon.

The 6-foot-2 Surrey Christian grad was a force at the net all season, finishing second in blocks in all of Canadian Interuniversity Sport.

Klomps, who maintained an 80 per cent average in UBCO's nursing program, was humbled by the award.

"I'm really surprised because there are a lot of other awesome female student-athletes here," said Klomps who was also a second team Canada West all-star. "I'm so grateful to be part of this great program. It's keeps getting better every year and to see our success and how it keeps growing is exciting."

Heat head coach Steve Manuel said Klomps possesses all the attributes the award represents.

"She's a great student, she's a stud athlete, leading the CIS and Canada west in blocks, and an all-star, " Manuel said of Klomps.

"She's very quiet, but a quiet leader who lets her actions show what needs to be done. I'm really happy for her and she's really deserving."

The other finalists for female student athletes were: Sandra Kilmartin (cross bountry), Hayley Carlson (soccer), Jacqueline Dubreuil (rugby), and Emily Kanester (basketball).

Will Deck

A graduate of Okanagan Mission Secondary, Deck's fourth season with the Heat golf program was his best yet.

Deck's standout year included shooting a low score of 425 during the season, to earn PACWEST player of the year and CCAA all-Canadian honours. The left-swinging human kinetics student finished first, third, and 11th in three tournaments this season, leading his Heat team to a third-place finish in the PACWEST, while finishing 14th in individual play the CCAA nationals.

Deck was honoured by the award and thrilled to see UBCO's growing golf program receive the recognition.

"It's a great honour," said Deck. "What I hope is this brings attention to our program, and really build upon our program as a whole. We've got a great group of guys and girls here and I would love nothing more than to see this program grow into its full potential."

Deck credits his teammates for making a fulfilling season possible.

"I couldn't be happier to have gotten this award with this group of guys, I mean they say golf is an individual sport, but when you're on the road with five other guys, the team atmosphere, it just makes it a lot easier to go out there and play."

Deck will return in the fall for his final semester with the Heat golf team.

The other nominees for male student-athlete of the year were: Austin Jones (soccer), Yassine Ghomari (basketball), Cole Mosychuk (rugby) and Jim Bell (volleyball).
