'New voice needed': Mike Gillis fired as Canucks GM and President, owner Aquilini to speak Wednesday
Mike Gillis has been relieved of his duties as the Vancouver Canucks' general manager and President, as per a team press release on Tuesday.
The night before – Monday – the Canucks lost 3-0 to the Anaheim Ducks and were eliminated from playoff contention for the first time in Gillis's tenure with Vancouver.
"The Vancouver Canucks had success under Mike's leadership, and we nearly reached our ultimate goal; but I believe we have reached a point where a change in leadership and new voice is needed," said team chairman Francesco Aquilini.
"I also want to thank our fans for their support for the Vancouver Canucks through a difficult and frustrating season... We haven't met their expectations or ours. We are committed to bringing the Stanley Cup to Vancouver for our fans and we will continue to do everything possible to reach that goal."
Gillis was hired in the summer of 2008 to replace the just-dismissed Dave Nonis as the team's GM. Under his watch and through six seasons, the Canucks won five Northwest Division titles and the team won the Western Conference Championship in 2011, en route to its third-ever visit to the Stanley Cup Final in franchise history.
The team also won two Presidents' Trophies, in 2011 and 2012.
In the past two seasons however, the Canucks have faltered from a league-best regular season in 2012 and have fallen out of Cup contention, culminating in this year's second-half collapse.
No replacement has been named for Canucks' GM and President, although rumours were swirling on Tuesday morning around past players and past captains Trevor Linden and Markus Naslund.
Not sure exactly what will go down in Van today, but Trevor Linden's name is in the mix. Perhaps, Van using Sakic and Av's template...#TSN— Darren Dreger (@DarrenDreger) April 8, 2014
Further to @DarrenDreger, nothing official yet, but sounds like Trevor Linden expected to be new president in VAN.— Bob McKenzie (@TSNBobMcKenzie) April 8, 2014
One scenario, as yet UNCONFIRMED, is GM Mike Gillis would be fired, Linden would hire new GM and new GM would sort out future of Tortorella.— Bob McKenzie (@TSNBobMcKenzie) April 8, 2014
But as I said earlier, highly volatile situation, many moving parts, so we'll see where this goes. No confirmations on anything yet.— Bob McKenzie (@TSNBobMcKenzie) April 8, 2014
Linden says on Global he has not been approached by ownership about #canucks prez job & than an announcement is not imminent— Farhan Lalji (@FarhanLaljiTSN) April 8, 2014
