Kelowna teen medals in international karate
Austin Medley, a 17-year-old who trains at Kelowna Karate and Fitness, hit the jackpot last weekend winning a pair of medals, including one gold, at the Ozawa Cup International Karate Tournament held in Las Vegas.
Medley took first place in his Kumite (sparring) division, then added a silver medal in the Kata competition.
Austin made quick work in the Kumite, defeating his first set of opponents with flawless victories, then howed patience in his last match defeating his opponent's strategy to come out victorious.
"I am incredibly proud of his performance and his dedication to the art of karate," said Paul Atkin, Austin's coach and the Head Instructor for Kelowna Karate and Fitness, "Austin has shown great maturity for his age and an outstanding work ethic to achieve this goal."
The annual international event hosted more than 1,000 competitors from 30 different countries.
Austin is one of four members from Kelowna Karate and Fitness that will be attending the Japan Karate Association World Championships held in Japan this October.
