Three national champs for Kelowna's DEKA Trampoline
Kelowna's DEKA Trampoline is home to three new national champions.
Cami Hill, Adele Lefevre and Danielle Gruber each earned gold medals in their respective categories last week at the Canadian national trampoline championships at Carleton University at Ottawa.
Coached by Angelo Despotas, DEKA was represented by eight athletes, all of whom were members of Team B.C.
In the national 18-and-under category, DEKA sent two rookies and one veteran to compete. This level proved to be the largest and most competitive in the competition with 48 athletes in the trampoline event and 46 in the double mini event.
Cami Hill, the veteran athlete, placed first and was crowned Canadian champion on trampoline.
The two rookies, Jordyn Yendley and Emily Welsh both just missed making finals placing 11th and 12th on trampoline. Welsh also competed on double mini with a final placing of sixth while Yendley just missed finals in the 11th spot on double mini.
In the High Performance Espoir category, Adele Lefevre placed first and was also crowned Canadian champion on the double mini event, while also placing seventh in her trampoline event.
Danielle Gruber and Emma Tucker both competed in the high performance junior category on both double mini trampoline and trampoline events. Gruber won in Double Mini to become DEKA’s third Canadian champion of this meet. She also placed fifth in her trampoline event. Tucker was fourth in double mini and 7th on Trampoline.
In the Senior High Performance category, Tyler Vermeulen placed 5th in men’s trampoline and Poppy Quinlan placed 13th on women’s trampoline.
DEKA Trampoline is a newly formed club that trains out of the Kelowna Gymnastix club.
"This was DEKA’s first national championships as a club and are very proud of their three national champions," said coach Aneglo Despotas.
Next stop for DEKA is the Canada Cup competition to be held at the end of July in Ontario where athletes will be competing for spots on the Canadian team bound for World Championships in Daytona Florida in the fall.
