The Kelowna Volleyball Club K’POW went unbeaten to capture the B.C. U18 boys title over the weekend in Abbotsford.

Despite some bumps along the way, the KVC boys rang up six straight wins, including a decisive victory over Fraser Valley in the gold medal game.

In the final, the K’POW trailed 17 in the third and deciding set before staging a furious rally to tie the game at 1010.

The final five points featured spectacular defense, hitting and timely blocking. A Devon Cote smash secured a 1513 victory and the K’POW’s first ever provincial championship win.

“When the final ball was crushed through the opponents block the team went wild as the parents and friends stormed the floor in celebration, said U18 coach Paul Thiessen. “This was by far the most exciting experience in my coaching career. I am so happy that these boys achieved a goal we had set a long time ago.

The KVC boys advanced to the final thanks to a win over Victoria in the semis, while Fraser Valley defeated the Force.

The tournament’s MVP was KVC’s Isaac Smit, while Cote and Reid Lobson were named to the tournament’s all-star team.

The KAPOW will next head to Edmonton for the Canadian U18 championship as B.C.‘s top seed.

“We will go into that event ranked third in Canada,” Thiessen said. “There are at least 10 strong teams that can beat each other on any given day. We look forward to the challenge.”
