After a record-setting regular season with the Western Hockey League's Kelowna Rockets, defenseman Madison Bowey was rewarded this week with a three-year, entry-level contract by the NHL's Washington Capitals.

The contract begins with the 2014-15 season.

Bowey, 18, who was chosen by the Capitals in the second round (No. 53) of the 2013 NHL Draft, is in his third season with the Rockets.

"It's overwhelming, relieving and it feels really good," Bowey said. "It puts me one step closer to my goal."

"It's nice to see Madison get this out of the way and get a contract signed," said Rockets head coach Ryan Huska. "It's neat to see a guy come in as a 16-year-old, develop and improve, get drafted and sign that first NHL contract. We're real happy for Madison."

The Winnipeg native had a team-record 21 goals and 60 points in 72 games this season while serving his fist year as captain.

A second-round pick of Kelowna in the 2010 WHL bantam draft, he had three points in his first five WHL playoff games this year.

Bowey's 21 goals in the regular season set a single season mark for Rockets blue liners, eclipsing the previous mark of 19 set by Tyson Barrie in the 2009-10 season. He finished fourth in Rockets scoring with 60 points and was plus-44 on the blueline.

Bowey and the Rockets open their second-round WHL playoff series Thursday night at Prospera Place with Game 1 against the Seattle Thunderbirds.
