Warriors and Vees fight to the finish

The West Kelowna Warriors and Penticton Vees are headed for a photo finish in the BCHL's Interior Division.

Heading into the final weekend, the Okanagan rivals are tied for top spot with 74 points, with two games remaining for each team.

The Warriors will visit the last-place Trail Smoke Eaters on Friday, before wrapping up the regular season Saturday at home to Trail.

The Vees have two games with the Silverbacks—Friday in Salmon Arm and Saturday in Penticton.

If teams remain tied at season's end, the Vees would take first place based on winning the season series between the teams (4-3).

The Warriors, who have already clinched no worse than a second-place finish, will host the opening round of the post-season beginning Tuesday, March 4 against either Vernon or Merritt, pending the outcome of the final weekend of games.

West Kelowna won its 33rd game of the season Saturday night, knocking off Trail 5-2 at Royal LePage Place.

David Pope scored twice to lead the Warriors attack. Carl Hesler, Adam Osczevski and Reid Simmonds also tallied in the victory.

Warriors head coach Rylan Ferster was pleased with the effort Saturday against a team with not much to play other than  pride.

"I thought we had a pretty good 60 minute effort," said Ferster.  "We got some traction on our power-play and I thought for the most part we had some pretty good structure."
