Last September, I shared with you my thoughts on the significant contribution family enterprise makes to our Canadian society and the constraints that are prevalent in contributing to our national economy.
In keeping with that theme, I must say I have been blown away by the creativity, innovation and total commitment of a particular father and son business enterprise story I will share with your today.
How I missed this company I’ll never know when last fall I listed six of the well-known family ventures in the Okanagan Valley landscape, but I am confident you will enjoy their journey to date.
You might also be amazed that family enterprises make up 80 per cent of business and 50 to 60 per cent of employment worldwide.
And when I also wrote a recent column about my visit with 1-800 Got Junk franchisee Yoree Grozenok and his rise to leadership within the Got Junk family, I shared with you a glimpse of Got Junk founder the Brian Scudamore. Well, that story hasn’t quite ended.
In 2005, Lane Martin, founder of the nationally franchised and industry applauded corporation in the furnace and air duct cleaning sector, Modern PurAir, had read an article in the Canadian Business magazine about Scudamore.
As Lane poured through the Scudamore article, his mind raced with thoughts of where and how he might create a similar entrepreneurial venture utilizing the skills he had acquired working with his father, Don, in the HVAC sector for the fourth year in Kelowna.
That business, Lane told me over a coffee in their professionally appointed corporate boardroom in northern Kelowna, was growing so fast his father was concerned the pace was becoming overwhelming to handle.
Then, the entrepreneurial bug bit this venturist once again, as Lane quickly reflected on the Got Junk magazine article.
He recognized that before him lay the future of his visionary approach to wealth creation, as he embraced the idea that at that moment in time there was no national player with the indoor air quality business.
So why couldn’t he and father Don build a national to fill that void?
So became the birth of Modern PurAir. From that idea stage to his acceptance of the fact that he had uncovered a real opportunity was approximately two years, the time at which the company launched its first franchise.
Lane said the process was a massive undertaking as he and his father realized that they required a move from old school branding of their existing business to a modernistic approach, informing existing and future customers what they were about plus giving their new company the roadmap for survival and growth in Canada.
In talking with Lane and Don, I continuously heard declarations of “education is a lifelong learning process” as the men sought and acquired advice and counsel from relevant marketing gurus, who showed them that clean air positioning and assembling with innovative and creative means, a full service indoor air quality solution, would be their future core goals.
To their credit, they haven’t lost that focus to this day—several years later.
I truly believe the company is a gift, not only to those of us here in the Okanagan region, whom so readily can access the Modern PurAir duct service, but to all Canadians across this great land.
Modern PurAir has fast become well known in Canada as a national franchise indoor air quality leader, operating in 30 of the top 100 municipalities in Canada.
The PurAir truck fleet is now at 60 fully wrapped trucks that allow provide PurAir services to over 12,000 households and 9,000 businesses annually, with those figures constantly on the rise as the company continues to grow in franchise holders, now numbering 30 .
The Martins remind me gently that PurAir is all about people, and to prove it Lane walked me through their corporate offices to see his head office team in action providing the franchisees, existing and new clients with top notch service with a corporate culture—second to none.
I told the Martins I felt at home from the moment I walked through the door of their offices to the moment I said goodbye.
And I know that PurAir customers must feel the same way.

In all my years of preaching the gospel of entrepreneurship across this Canadian landscape, I had to give pause to reflect on a venture that so moved me as this relatively young company has accomplished in five very short years.
