On June 29 at the MuchMusic CTV Studios in Toronto, Hazel Burns of Kelowna was a recipient of the MusiCounts Fred Sherratt Award, given each year to 12 outstanding post-secondary graduates of Canadian music programs.
Burns graduated from OKM Secondary School in 1998 and received her Bachelor of Music in Voice Performance from the University of Victoria in 2002. After several years of working and traveling, Burns relocated to Montreal and completed a diploma program in sound engineering at Recording Arts Canada.
She then successfully completed her qualifying year at McGill University and entered the Master’s program in Sound Recording—the only female in her class.
During this two-year Master’s program, Burns had the opportunity to do a workstudy internship at the Banff Centre for the Arts where she met and worked with some of the world’s top classical musicians.
In addition, Burns was also involved in the sound mixing of the 2010 Winter Olympics theme song I Believe, performed by Nikki Yanofsky. After graduating from McGill with her Master’s in Music, Sound Recording last June, Hazel returned to the Banff Centre for the Arts as their senior producer (workstudy) from January until April.
She is now employed as an intern in the sound department at CTV in Toronto and is hoping to be involved in the CTV coverage of the London Olympics in 2012.
