A by-election has been called for the federal Cloverdale-Langley City riding on Dec. 16. Voters will be looking to fill the seat left vacant by John Aldag, who stepped down to run, unsuccessfully, in the recent provincial election. Conservatives have already nominated former MP Tamara Jansen, who represented the riding from 2019 to 2021, before being defeated by Aldag.

A by-election has been called for the Cloverdale—Langley City federal riding.

It was announced on Sunday, Nov. 10 by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's office, on the same day the Liberal party selected Madison Fleischer as a "Team Trudeau" candidate at a Surrey nomination meeting.

Fleischer, who operates a public relations firm in Langley, attended Trinity Western University. She was named one of Surrey’s Top 25 Under 25 for her project, Slava Sweatshirts, that helped provide financial assistance to Ukrainians during the ongoing conflict.

Federal Conservatives have already selected Tamara Jansen, who won the CPC nomination at an Oct. 21 riding contest.

The federal seat has been empty since Aldag resigned to run for the B.C. NDP in the provincial Langley-Abbotsford riding just under six months ago.

He was defeated by provincial Conservative Harman Bhangu, who won by more than 5,600 votes.

Aldag represented the Liberals in the seat from 2015-19, was ousted by Jansen, then regained his seat in 2021, holding it until he stepped down.

It is the 11th byelection for a federal seat since the 2021 federal election.

Elections Canada said there would be four advanced voting days, Dec. 6 to 9 .

Registered voters can also cast a ballot at the Elections Canada office.

To vote by mail, voters have to apply by 6 p.m. on Dec. 10, and return their ballot by mail, or in person at the Elections Canada office, before polls close on Dec. 16.

Elections Canada is hiring election workers to fill various paid positions in the Cloverdale–Langley City by-election. Anyone interested  apply online at elections.ca or contact their local Elections Canada office for more information.
