Steve Carell and Mark Ruffalo star in the drama 'Foxcatcher'

In Theatres: Steve Carell’s Foxcatcher; Corner Gas: The Movie; Benedict Cumberbatch in The Imitation Game

Both Carell and Cumberbatch have received praise and Oscar buzz in their respective roles. Also opening: Horrible Bosses 2

In theatres this weekend…

Foxcatcher

Steve Carell stars as millionaire wrestling coach and paranoid-schizophrenic John du Pont, who murdered Olympic champion Dave Schultz in 1996. The film won best director for Bennett Miller at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival, and Carell’s performance has garnered Oscar buzz from critics.

The film currently carried an 86 per cent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, as well as this glowing review from the Globe and Mail‘s Liam Lacey:

“The triumph of Foxcatcher is not in the subject but in its art. The clear-eyed compassion and moral intelligence of Miller’s film brings sense to the senseless, and finds the human pulse behind the tabloid shock. It’s not a movie to make you feel good, but, at moments, it reminds you what goodness is.”

Also opening:

Heartbeat, a Canadian film starring Tanya Davis and Stewart Legere, follows a musician trying to make it in Halifax, Nova Scotia’s art scene (TIFF).

Corner Gas: The Movie, the finally arrived feature based on the hit Canadian TV show starring Brent Butt, Gabrielle Miller, and Frank Ewanuick, premiered in Regina last week. The film will run in theatres from December 3 to 7, 2014.

The Imitation Game, the winner of the top prize at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, continues to pull near-unanimous praise from critics and viewers. The film stars Benedict Cumberbatch as British code breaker Alan Turing, and Keira Knightley.

Horrible Bosses 2 reunites Jason Sudeikis, Jason Bateman, and Charlie Day in their roles from the 2011 box office hit, with supporting and guest performances from Christoph Waltz, Chris Pine, Jennifer Aniston, Kevin Spacey, and Jamie Foxx.
