15 displaced following townhouse fire in Kelowna

A hedge fire spread to a property near the intersection of Badke and Franklyn Road in Kelowna


Two townhomes suffered extensive damage following a suspicious fire, on Friday afternoon. 

First arriving fire crews spotted heavy flame coming from the side and exterior of a residence.

According to Assistant Fire Chief Dennis Craig, there were several people inside at the time of the incident with one individual having to be looked over by BC Ambulance, it’s unclear if they were transported to hospital. 

“Right now we currently have about 15 people who are currently displaced and will be looked after by emergency social services,” said Craig.

A bus was brought in to provide a cool place for those displaced from the fire, due to the rising temperatures.

RCMP were also on scene as the fire was deemed suspicous. 

As the hedges outside the townhouse were involved in the blaze, Craig noted that residents need to look at their residences more carefully as summer approaches and seriously consider fire-smarting their properties. 

A fire that engulfed the cedar hedges on the front lawn of a property in Kelowna's Rutland neighbourhood also charred and caused smoke damage to a home.  

The fire ignited at a townhouse complex at approximately 4:30 p.m., near the intersection of Badke Road and Franklyn Road, on June 21.

Fire crews were able to extinguish the blaze, before it spread to the rest of the townhouse complex. One free-standing home was damaged as were the hedges in front of the house. 

Neighbour Braydyn Amyotte witnessed the blaze's growth. He says the fire started on the ground floor of the home before spreading out onto the front yard, where it engulfed the cedar hedges. 

First crews have confirmed that the house suffered extensive charring and smoke damage as a result of the blaze.

All residents have been evacuated. The fire department, police and Fortis BC crews remain at the scene.
