The RCMP Emergency Response Team (ERT) was called to Plaza 33 in Rutland on Thursday (Feb. 1) morning.
Multiple officers were seen in the parking lot of the strip mall on Highway 33 around 10:00 a.m.
A note posted to the door of the TD Bank explains to customers that the business is closed due to an emergency situation and those needing to use the bank are directed to go to the Dilworth Centre location.
“This incident did not directly involve the nearby financial institution nor any of the surrounding businesses,” said Corp. Michael Gauthier. “The investigation is sensitive in nature, remains ongoing and no further details regarding what our officers are investigating will be provided at this time.”
He added there is no is no concern for public safety.
Earlier reports said a robbery may have taken place.
According to a witness at the scene, one suspect was quickly apprehended by police.
There were possibly two suspects according to another witness who was in the bank at the time of the incident. He said there was a commotion with a man in front of him and then bank employees hid under tables.
The customers were evacuated out the back door of the bank.
The Okanagan Regional Library, located next door to the TD Bank, was also closed along with several other businesses in the plaza.
