‘Knocked down’: Thick black smoke spews from house fire in Rutland, Kelowna

The blaze on Mallach Road started at approximately 2:30 p.m.

UPDATE: 3:40 p.m.

The house fire that created black smoke visible from across Kelowna on Oct. 27, has been knocked down.

“The firefighters did a good job knocking it down quickly,” said Platoon Captain Micah Volk when speaking with media at the scene of the blaze.

Fire crews got a call about 2:30 p.m. Friday that a large attached to a home was fully involved in flames. Four engines with 20 personnel responded along with a rescue crew to 530 Mallach Road in Rutland.

The blaze spread from the garage to the single-storey home causing extensive damage. Volk said that thanks to the quick action, firefighters were able to prevent flames from reaching neighbouring homes.

There were no injuries caused by the blaze.

Volk said that the homeowner evacuated the house safely before crews arrived on the scene and is in the care of emergency support services.

FortisBC disconnected electricity to the home after the power pole was burned down. The rest of the neighbourhood is not impacted by the outage.

A travel trailer belonging to the homeowner was destroyed by the fire. Multiple vehicles, trees and another trailer were also damaged. A propane tank attached to the RV exploded during the fire.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation but it is not considered suspicious.
