Get ready to soak up the sunshine and embrace the vibrant energy of downtown Kelowna as the Meet Me on Bernard program gets an early start next week.
Beginning Friday, May 17, Bernard Avenue between Abbott and Water Street will transform into a pedestrian corridor, creating a space for locals and visitors to enjoy.
The 200 block of Bernard will be closed to motorists starting at 6 a.m. on Wednesday, May 15. Businesses will remain open during the setup phase.
Water Street will remain accessible to vehicle traffic, as will Lawrence Avenue at the intersection with Abbott St., as a left turn only.
Motorists are urged to exercise caution and be mindful of pedestrians and cyclists when navigating Bernard Ave.
Meet Me on Bernard timeline:
- May 15 - initial closure of Bernard Ave. (200 block only) for setup, with all businesses remaining open;
- May 17 - Bernard Ave. (200 block) opens to pedestrians and cyclists in the afternoon;
- June 26 - Closure of Bernard Ave. (300 block) for setup, with businesses remaining open;
- June 28 -300 block of Bernard Ave. opens to pedestrians and cyclists in the afternoon;
- Sept. 3 - Tear down of the 200 and 300 blocks of Bernard Ave.;
- Sept. 5 - Bernard Ave. reopens to regular vehicle traffic by the end of the day.
Parking arrangements have been made to accommodate the extended patios in the 300, 400, and 500 blocks.
Designated PayByPhone 15-minute pick-up and drop-off zones will be located along Abbott and Mill streets, transitioning into taxi areas from 9 p.m. to midnight.
