The 2012 Royal Canadian Legion poppy campaign kicked off in Kelowna on Friday with both Mayor Walter Gray and local MP Ron Cannan telling a group of veterans at the legion hall on Bertram Street how important they feel it is for Canadians young and old to remember those who died in the service of their country. Gray and Cannan were two of the first to buy poppies for this year’s Kelowna campaign, which will feature 840 locations throughout the city where poppies can be picked up and donations made. The campaign will run through Nov 10 and Remembrance Day celebrations will be held throughout the Central Okanagan—including at the cenotaph in City Park—on Nov. 11 starting at 11 a.m.
