Chlorine leak at Sun Valley Foods Processing

Police establish half mile no-go zone around Leckie Place and evacuate adjacent businesses.

Update: As of 4:40 p.m. Thursday the perimeter was lifted around Sun Valley Food Processing on Leckie Place when air quality was determined to be clear of chlorine gas.

Road blocks within half a mile around the location were lifted.


Sun Valley Food Processing on Leckie Place in Kelowna has been evacuated after chlorine bleach spill, about 3 p.m. Thursday.

About 20 staff are being assessed and treated for the affects of chlorine gas exposure.

Businesses around Leckie Place and on Dilworth are being evacuated. Big Steel Box, Pepsi Plant and Lordco automotive are being evacuated.

RCMP have set up a no-go perimeter along Enterprise Way from Cooper to Banks; along Dilworth from Enterprise to Omineca; and Leckie and Hunter to Enterprise.

All traffic and pedestrians are being cleared from the area toward Orchard Park mall.

By 4:11 p.m. hazardous material experts were entering Sun Valley Foods to monitor the air quality.
