A four-month-old baby girl was fighting for her life and an injured woman was under arrest in hospital after a violent altercation at an upscale condo building in Toronto, police said Wednesday.

A man was stabbed and assaulted in the same incident and suffered non-life-threatening injuries, police said. They would not comment on the relationship between the three.

Police had initially said the baby was stabbed, but later clarified that the child’s critical injuries were not related to stab wounds. They would not say, however, precisely what caused the baby’s injuries, or what injuries the arrested woman had sustained.

The incident took place on Wednesday morning, with officers receiving a call from a west-end condo building around 8:30 a.m. about an injured man and infant.

“Our officers rushed to the scene and found the baby,” said police spokesman Const. David Hopkinson. “The baby had very serious injuries.”

Paramedics, escorted by police, rushed the infant to a trauma centre, where she was listed as being in critical condition, Hopkinson said.

Police also found the injured man at the scene and eventually found the woman as well.

“There was a woman that had been identified as being responsible for these attacks, so we searched the area (and) we found the woman,” Hopkinson said. “She was found suffering from some fairly serious injuries. She has been taken into custody and brought to a hospital to be treated.”

Police said at least part of the incident had taken place in the lobby of the building, which is located across the street from the Sherway Gardens mall.

Building resident Joan Sloss, 70, said she saw paramedics while she was getting her mail in the morning, but initially did not think anything of it. She said learned about the incident after watching the news.

“I feel so bad for the baby,” Sloss said, noting that she did not know the people involved.

Tamara Lothian, 39, said she was heading to a doctor’s appointment when she saw ambulances and paramedics outside the building. Once she returned home, she said a member of the building’s cleaning staff told her what had happened.

“To hear it was a four-month-old baby is just so sad,” Lothian said.

Sylloo Bharucha, another building resident, said she was shaken by the incident.

“This is very upsetting,” said the 72-year-old.

“I hope the baby makes it.”

Several police cars remained parked outside the building Wednesday afternoon.
