Free on-street parking is coming back to downtown Penticton this holiday season.

City council voted Tuesday, Nov. 5, to make on-street parking free for five consecutive weekends, starting Nov. 29.

The city has historically provided free parking in its downtown core through December as a Christmas shopping promotion, at the request of the Downtown Penticton Business Improvement Association.

It is estimated that this year's promotion will lead to between $18,000 and $20,000 in loss of revenue for the city, according to a staff report submitted to council.

Free on-street parking for two hours will be in effect on Friday, Nov 29, to kick off Magic on Main Street weekend.

The initiative applies to on-street metered parking stalls on Fridays and Saturdays. Parking on Sunday in the area is already free.

City parking lots and private parking lots rules will still be in effect.

With council's unanimous vote Tuesday, on-street parking will be on the following days:

• Nov. 29 and 30

• Dec. 6 and 7

• Dec. 13 and 14

• Dec. 20 and 21

• Dec. 27 and 28
