Police were called to assist the Fire Department at 10:45 a.m. Wednesday, in response to a gas main that was accidentally breached when a crew was digging in the 1400 block of Mountain Ave.

“The strong smell of gas forced an evacuation of 36 homes in the areas of Montcalm Rd. and Monterey Cresent,” said Const. Steve Holmes.

“Police have contained the area and will remain until the evacuation is rescinded.”

City crews are on scene locating the source of the breach and hope to have it dealt with in the near future. The power to the area was cut off to prevent accidental ignition of the gas, which is said to be dissipating.

Traffic control is currently in effect on Mountain Ave at Kelview and at Monterey.
