Good evening Kelowna. Here is your evening update on some of the things making news around the Central Okanagan today.
1. Kicking off with the weather, the Tuesday outlook is sunny and partly cloudy, driving the temperature up to 13C with a low of 5C. Enjoy it while it lasts as rain is forecast for Wednesday and Thursday.
2) West Kelowna residents can look forward to an aerial display by a forest firefighting aircraft on Wednesday at about 1 p.m. The air tanker will be dropping a water load on a forested hillside in the Smith Creek fire area and will also conduct a flyover near the intersection of Highway 97 and Gellatly Road, for the benefit of those gathered to watch who are participating in the annual Wildland Fire Canada 2016 conference taking place in Kelowna.
3) Kudos to Okanagan Sun defensive stalwart Layne Hull, named the outstanding defensive player and top linebacker in the B.C. Football Conference for 2016. Hull called the awards a great honour, and credited his teammates and coaches for his success this season. The Sun take on the Westshore Rebels for the league championship on Saturday in Victoria.
4) Tonight will be the awards presentation for the third annual 2016 Community Leader Awards. This initiative recognizes the outstanding work done by volunteers in our community. The Kelowna Capital News helped initiate this awards program with the support of many local community organizations helping to nominate worthy recipients. Watch for photos on Facebook and our Community Leader Awards supplement published in our Friday edition this week. As well, we will be publishing the bios on all the award nominees on a daily basis on our website beginning this Friday. Congratulations to the award nominees and all those who participated in this making this event possible.
5) Police are asking for the public's help in looking for a man allegedly lurking around local area schools, which has now become a formal investigation after a complaint about a suspicious individual hanging around several schools was reported.
6) And finally in a bit of an odd one in Alberta, judges in an custody case in Medicine Hat have ordered a boy not to wear girls' clothes in public. The mother supports what she says in the child's wish to identify and dress as a girl, but the father does not and blames the mother for the child gender's confusion. Meanwhile, a sexual minorities expert says judges need to be better educated about gender identity.
