A vehicle fire just south of Summerland quickly spread to the grass along Highway 97, Monday.

The vehicle fire, near Pyramid Provincial Park, was reported on Sept. 30 at about 2:20 p.m.

While the area where the blaze was reported is outside of Summerland’s usual fire coverage area, the district's fire department sent three vehicles and 10 firefighters to the scene. Crews spent about an hour extinguishing the blaze.

Summerland Fire Chief Rob Robinson said the time of year and fire conditions could have resulted in significant damage.

“With the wind, that fire could have been in Summerland within five minutes,” he said.

The blaze measured six metres by 45 metres by the time firefighters arrived on the scene.
