Opening day at Big White

Skiers and boarders flocked to Big White on Wednesday for the biggest midweek opening day in history.

More than 1000 skiers scanned through the lifts before 10 a.m. for their chance to hit the fresh powder.

Lift tickets were 50 per cent off on the first day of the season and will continue to be half price until more terrain and lifts are open.

Those who managed to sneak away from their normal weekly duties were treated to live music, giveaways and free hot chocolate at the bottom of Ridge Rocket.

The mountain has had 42 centimetres of fresh snow in the last seven days, building up the alpine snow base to 70 cm.

Owen with the Big White Community Ski School was just one of a few who skipped lessons Wednesday morning to be one of the first on the mountain.

“This is my fourth season getting first chair, we were all so excited for the ski season to start – we love Big White because it has lots of different types of terrain,” said Owen.

With more snow in the forecast for the weekend, the resort will be reassessing snow conditions and opening more lifts and terrain as soon as they are cleared by Ski Patrol.

Big White kicks off Christmas events this weekend with the Big White Light Up on Saturday night.
