Solar power is making it difficult to maintain the ice at the Stuart Park rink, which was closed Thursday afternoon due to melting.

“The temperature outside isn’t the issue—it’s the extended sun exposure and angle of the sun on the ice that is causing it to melt,” said city building services manager Martin Johansen.

The City of Kelowna has scheduled to close the Stuart Park ice surface on Feb. 28. “We will try to keep it open until then, but when it’s sunny outside skaters should expect closures, particularly from midday until after sunset,” said Johansen.
