Kelowna: 26 accidents from snowy conditions in mild year

Drivers unaccustomed to ice and snow managed to drive into each other and off the road all day long Sunday

Icy road conditions had Kelowna RCMP hopping over the weekend.

Police were called to some 26 different collisions as drivers tried to cope with snow and ice for one of the first times in the year, despite the December date.

“It’s a high amount for this late in the season,” said Const. Kris Clark, acknowledging the extra effort cops made over the weekend.

He noted the main arteries were largely alright, though smaller areas where snow had thawed and then frozen caused a number of issues.

He said the cops do call the city to ask for areas to be ploughed or treated for ice, but they have to know there’s an issue to do so.

“In a lot of cases you don’t know something is bad unless you have a collision,” he said.
