A roof fire at the Norelco Cabinet plant in Kelowna sent employees scurrying out of the building this afternoon.

The fire was ignited while roofers were doing some patchwork to an area of the building’s roof.

Glen Ostoforoff, working in Norelco at the time, said he first saw the smoke coming from the area between the roof and the drop ceiling.

“I noticed it but didn’t think too much of it until I started seeing flames,” he said. “I saw bits of an orange flash and then I saw the flames. I yelled fire, pulled the fire alarm and started to run out of there.”

Another roofer who was working on the adjacent building said he saw the smoke and flames and rushed over with his crew to help where they could.

“They had the fire extinguishers on it right away,” said Jesse Merritt. “They emptied three extinguishers on the fire.”

The Kelowna Fire Department responded with a number of vehicles to the scene, but there were no visible signs of fire coming from the roof within a half hour after responding to the scene.

Nobody was injured and the staff were told to take the rest of the afternoon off while firefighters ensured the blaze was out.

But because the plant was sealed off, none of the workers could get to their cars, which are parked at the rear of the plant.
