Not only were Tanya and Jon Garrett stunned when they discovered their wedding cake had been awarded best wedding cake B.C.—so were the more than 500 others involved in professional wedding work who attended last week’s awards in Vancouver.
“It’s the first time the award has left the Lower Mainland,” commented Garrett, with a grin.
Their firm, Whisk Cake Company on Rutland Road, was started four years ago by Tanya and she submitted five cakes in the wedding cake category of the B.C. Wedding Awards this year.
To their surprise and delight, the 12-tier, four-foot high wedding cake she made for their own wedding in September, 2012, is the one chosen by judges as the best in B.C. this year.
The couple were in attendance at the awards, which include 26 categories from photography to floral design and which attracted 550 competitors.
“It was pretty awesome,” commented Jon. It’s mostly Vancouver-area professionals, so there was surprise that this year when four awards left the Lower Mainland and came to the Okanagan last week.
Judges were brought in from a Toronto wedding magazine, as well as photographers and wedding planners, he said.
Tanya said their own wedding cake was the ‘most showy’ of those she submitted, but it was particularly special to win because it was made to celebrate their own wedding.
“But I put my heart and soul into all the cakes I make,” she added.
She had to assemble her cake between her wedding and the reception, while still in her full-length wedding gown. It involved climbing up on a ladder and having her bridesmaids pass her the tiers to complete the cake, she said.
They had made her a special apron to fit over the wedding dress, realizing she would be working at her own wedding.
In addition to their award for a wedding cake, Yuriko Larson’s Vintage Origami wedding decor also brought a first place award back to Kelowna, and Chris and Elisha of Abby Photography in Kelowna brought back two top photography awards this year.
The Garrett cake included eight cakes, some of which were spice carrot cakes with cream cheese butter cream while others were chocolate chiffon.
“Wedding cakes are no long inedible, or fruit cakes. In fact, ours are all made of local, organic ingredients so they taste even better than they look,” said Tanya.
“And this competition was based solely on looks. We submitted photos,” she added.
