A Kaleden man was shot with his own handgun while allegedly trying to break into a West Kelowna home on Dec. 23.
West Kelowna RCMP responded to a dropped 911 emergency call of a reported shooting inside a home on Last Road at 5:41 p.m. Darryn Allen Nelson, 41, was allegedly trying to force his way inside the home when a struggle ensued with the resident and Nelson was shot in a lower extremity.
RCMP said Nelson fled the scene and attended the hospital for treatment of his injuries. He was later released and arrested by RCMP officers at the hospital.
Nelson was charged with several criminal offences including break and enter, uttering threats and a variety of firearms related offices including pointing a firearm and possession contrary to order.
"The ongoing police investigation has revealed that this was an isolated incident, not a random attack," said Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey. "The parties involved in the altercation were well known to each other."
"No one else inside the home was injured," said O’Donaghey.
Nelson was held in custody since the incident and appeared in court the morning of Dec. 28. He was remanded into custody and is expected to re-appear in court next on Jan. 5, 2017.
Earlier this year Nelson was sentenced to 11 months in custody on charges of flight from a peace officer and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle in July after leading police on a vehicle chase through icy roads in the Twin Lakes area. Including time served since his arrest, Nelson had under six months remaining on his sentence in July. Nelson was on bail at the time of those offences.

The Dec. 23, 2015 chase followed the report of multiple break-ins at residences in the Twin Lakes area, however Crown counsel at the time did not allege Nelson was involved in any of the property crimes which co-accused Derek John Ledgard pleaded guilty to in May, receiving 14 months in jail.
