MP Cannan, Lake Country Coun. Dickie reacts to gun battle in Ottawa

Cannan tweets his conodolences while Dickie breathes sigh of relief when he hears from daughter in Ottawa

A chaotic scene continues to play out on Parliament Hill in Ottawa.

A Canadian Forces soldier has died after being fired upon at the War Memorial in Ottawa Wednesday morning and numerous shots were fired inside the House of Commons.

“Canada has lost another soldier. My condolences to those he loved,” said Ron Cannan, Lake Country MP, on Twitter.

“We have seen many acts of bravery today. This tragedy will not weaken us.”

A gunman was shot inside the House of Commons.

“MPs and Hill staff owe their safety, even lives, to Sergeant at Arms Kevin Vickers who shot attacker just outside the MPs’ caucus rooms,” said Craig Scott, Toronto NDP MP, on Twitter.

Owen Dickie, a Lake Country councillor, had some tense moments as he tried to get a hold of his daughter and son-in-law, who both work for the Department of Foreign Affairs in downtown Ottawa.

“I was trying to find out if they are OK. I just got word they are OK but under lockdown so now I can breath,” he said Wednesday morning.

“Although this is a horrible situation, I do hope that our Parliament buildings and all places of government remain open and accessible to the citizens of Canada.”

Media report that police continue to search for any other possible suspects.
