A year-old investigation has led to charges against a local police officer.

The B.C. Prosecution Service has approved a single count of driving without due care against a member of the RCMP in relation to an accident on Highway 6 in Coldstream Aug. 6, 2016.

“The incident involved a collision between an RCMP truck driven by an on-duty member of the Lumby detachment and a motorcycle,” states a release.

During the incident near Brewer Road, the two Kelowna occupants of the motorcycle — a 46-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman — were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries while the RCMP officer was uninjured.

The Independent Investigation Office, which oversees officer-related incidents of death or serious harm, was notified of the incident and conducted an investigation. The agency determined that an offence may have been committed and the information was passed on to Crown for consideration.

“As this matter is now before the Court, BCPS is unable to release additional information or comment further at this time,” states a release from BCPS.

Cst. Megan Valenta is scheduled to appear in Vernon provincial court Sept. 14.
