Running from the law doesn’t work for Kelowna man

A 22-year-old Kelowna man is facing multiple driving charges after a vehicle fled from police late last night.

A member of the Kelowna RCMP was conducting routine patrols on Highway 33 On March 19 at 10:55 p.m., when he observed a westbound red Ford Mustang accelerating to turn South onto Gerstmar Road.

“The Mustang skidded through the turn, causing eastbound traffic to brake heavily in order to avoid a collision. The vehicle then sped towards Springfield Road where the police officer managed to close on it as it stopped for a red light,” said Const. Kris Clark.

“The officer engaged his emergency equipment to conduct a traffic stop but the Mustang took off southbound on Springfield Road at a very high rate of speed.”

The vehicle and driver description were broadcast on police radio and investigators soon located the car at a residence on the 3700 block of Casorso Road. A 22-year-old Kelowna man was taken into custody without incident and was transported to the Kelowna Detachment where he provided breath samples one and half times the legal limit.

The man was found to be prohibited from driving and the Mustang was impounded for at least the next seven days.

“Based solely on the dangerous driving behaviours observed by police, investigators are fortunate to not be dealing with any related serious injury or fatal collision,” said Const. Clark.

The 22-year-old Kelowna man is facing a number of possible charges including Impaired Driving, Driving While Over .08, Driving While Prohibited and Flight from Police. He will be brought before a Judicial Justice of the Peace sometime today and is expected to be released for Court at a later date.
