Kelowna’s culinary scene has become significantly more robust in recent years, and nowhere is that more evident than in the downtown core.
A grand total of 90 restaurants have opened their doors to a bumper crop of foodies and wine connoisseurs who year-round flock to the Valley for fresh local food.
“It’s not just burgers and hotdogs down here anymore,” said Ryan Watters of the Downtown Kelowna Association.
Downtown restaurants offer everything from exotic dishes to farm-to-table fare by some of the region’s top chefs.
The only problem is finding the time and money to try them all.
With that in mind the DKA is hosting the Taste of Downtown event this weekend, said Watters.
“People just need to come down, pick up a passport, go to participating restaurants and taste samples,” he said.
If getting a freebie sampler of what the best the downtown has to offer isn’t enough, each location will have a sticker that can be slapped into the foodie passport, and once it’s filled, it just needs to be submitted to win some top prizes.
“Last year was the first one, and it went great,” said Watters. “The nice thing is most restaurants are happy to open their doors and welcome people in, and it gives people a chance to know what is downtown and what are the different options down here.”
This year the event will dovetail into a Festivals Kelowna event that will bring a bounty of live music to the city as the day gives in to evening.
“So come down, get a belly full and take in some great performances,” he said.
All participants need to remember are four simple steps:
- Visit participating restaurants. You can’t win if you don’t stop in. That rhymes.
- Collect coveted autographs. You need at least four stamps/signatures from each of the five coloured categories to enter.
- Enter. Drop your passport off at the Downtown Kelowna Info Booth at the foot of Bernard Ave. The pretty black and white one with the nice people in it.
- Wait. We’ll announce the winners on downtownkelowna.com on July 30th.
The taste of downtown event takes place Saturday, July 28. Visit the DKA website for further information on participants on how to get your hands on a foodie passport.
