Slick wheels on full display at Vernon car show

The 25th annual Sun Valley Cruise-In is bringing tons of classic cars to Vernon this weekend

30th Avenue in Vernon was filled with roughly 200 vintage cars for the Sun Valley Cruise-In car show Saturday, July 8.

The Cruise-In is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. After going on a cruise around the Vernon and Lumby areas, owners of classic cars, hot rods and some newer models showed off their sparkly wheels downtown. People were bustling along 30th Avenue, which was blocked off to traffic for the car show, next to the downtown summer plaza.

Kenny Simms brought his 1965 Mustang convertible down to the car show.

“I built it pretty much from the ground up, it had just an engine, transmission, no wires, nothing,” said Simms. “I had to get it all painted and do all the work right from scratch.”

Simms said it took him just six months to do the bulk of the work on the car.

He took part in the cruise earlier in the day Saturday, and on Sunday he’ll leave his car at home and just enjoy taking a look at the other cars on display.

“I like the 60s and 70s muscle cars, but anything’s good. If somebody’s got a good car … and they’re proud of it, that’s good. That’s all I need to know.”

The Sun Valley Cruise-In festivities continue Sunday, with the main show featuring about 400 cars in Polson Park. There will also be a pinup contest, a swap meet and live music by Dixie Fried Hep Katz.
