A suspected car thief lost Mounties on a wild ride through West Kelowna, but was snared by their own dangerous driving.

The Kelowna RCMP Integrated Road Safety Unit is investigating after a suspected stolen vehicle with no insurance allegedly fled from police and later crashed into three other vehicles Monday morning.

A member of the Kelowna RCMP Integrated Road Safety Unit (IRSU) spotted a vehicle that had just been reported stolen from a residence on the 3400 block of Logan Road, Monday at around 8 a.m.

“The officer engaged his emergency equipment but the blue Dodge Dakota sped away at a high rate of speed,” said Const. Kris Clark.

“Due to the potential danger to the public, police did not pursue the vehicle. Unfortunately, the Dakota apparently continued driving erratically and was subsequently involved in a multi-vehicle collision on Gosset Road at Highway 97. According to witnesses, the Dakota turned westbound onto Gosset Road where it struck two cars and clipped a third.”

Three men then exited the pickup and fled northbound on foot into the nearby Westbank Shopping Centre parking lot.

All three men were taken into custody shortly after the crash and are being held pending further investigation.

At least one person was taken to hospital suffering from non-life threatening injuries.

Kelowna RCMP IRSU continues to investigate with assistance from the West Kelowna RCMP.
