Truck fuel spill backs up Highway 97 West Kelowna traffic

A transport truck pulling a load of crushed cars had its transmission explode while traveling westbound on Highway 97 near Westside Road in West Kelowna.

The explosion sent transmission parts shooting into the neighbouring fuel tank, which ended up dumping about 100 litres of diesel fuel on the highway.

Both Argo Road Maintenance and Westside Fire Rescue officials responded to the accident scene to deal with the truck stall, which has backed up westbound traffic.

Police say it will take about 30 minutes to clean up the fuel spill, while the transport carrier, Essential Transport Inc. of Kelowna, sent out another cab to move the load to its initial destination.

Eastbound traffic on the highway has not been affected by the fuel spill, which occurred near the site for the new highway interchange project now under construction.
