Are you in gardener’s winter doldrums?
Vegetable growing tips for the novice to green thumb will be offered through a series of workshops Saturday, Feb. 11 in the Student Services Building of Okanagan College.
The garden club has enlisted four outstanding speakers addressing various topics.
The first is Gabe Cipes, from Summerhill Winery. Cipes is a certified biodynamicist/permaculturalist and is inspired by the ideas and knowledge associated with creating self-sustaining food producing ecosystems and sees himself, planning and planting food forests and working with ecological communities for as long as he is able.
His presentation will give an overview of starting your own food production in your yard with Vegetable Gardening 101.
Next up will be Pots, Planters and Raised beds: Vegetables In Small Spaces given by Kathryn McCourt, a founding member of the Penticton Urban Agriculture Association who comes with many years of gardening experience.
After a lunch break, Maxine Boulding, a certified horticulturalist, will present Starting Successful Seeds, which is sometimes a challenge for even the most-seasoned gardener.
The final talk will be Square-Foot Gardening: Growing the Most Crop In a Small Space by Toni Boot, a certified square foot instructor and former owner of Grasslands Nursery.
A dynamic presenter and passionate organic gardener, Boot will close the day by convincing us all that we can grow our own vegetables.
There are door prizes and your chance to win a composter from RDCO Waste Management.
There will be an array of vendors and exhibits for you to visit in the breaks.
Come summer you should be reaping the benefits of this day’s workshops with a little effort in our gardening space, be it the back 40 or a few planters on the deck. Happy gardening.
