Watkins goes 23rd overall in NFL draft

West Kelowna’s Danny Watkins was picked 23rd overall by the Philadelphia Eagles at Thursday night’s NFL draft, becoming just the fourth Canadian to ever be selected in the first round.

The 26-year-old offensive lineman, who only started his football career four years ago at Butte College in northern California, played for Butte for two years before he earning a scholarship at Baylor University in Waco, Texas, where he played the last two seasons.

Prior to enrolling at Butte, where he took a fire sciences program, Watkins worked as a volunteer firefighter in West Kelowna.

As a thank you to the fire department, he invited Chief Wayne Schnitzler and several other firefighters to be his guests at the draft in New York City.
