Young driver veers across Highway 33, crashing into a tree

The young driver was fortunate on Tuesday after the car he was driving veered across lanes on Highway 33 and crashed into a tree.

Kelowna RCMP Const. Lise Marion said a Volkswagen was headed eastbound on Highway 33 shortly after 5 p.m. yesterday when the vehicle crossed over from the eastbound to westbound lanes, between Bryden and Franklyn Roads in Rutland.

Marian said the driver was reaching for an item in the car when the lane change occurred, while other witnesses said speed may have been a factor. The car careened along the sidewalk taking out a light standard before coming to a halt after colliding with a tree.

“The driver was wearing a seat belt and was not injured but the car suffered serious damage,” Marian said.

The investigation is continuing and charges are pending.
