West Kelowna makes a deal with its unionized employees

Workers get pay hike of 1.5 per cent each year for next three years.

West Kelowna council has ratified a new collective agreement between the District of West Kelowna and the Association of Local Government Employees Union (ALGEU).

The deal was the first round of bargaining between the district and the ALGEU. The two sides bargained for 2.5 months and accomplished required changes to the collective agreement, say district officials.

They added consideration was given to market conditions as part of the settlement process.

Outstanding issues where settled through a mutually-agreed-to mediation process on June 9 and 10, resulting in a signed memorandum of settlement that was ratified by council in camera prior to it regulr public council meeting on June 14.

The settlement features a three-year term, a 1.5 per cent wage increase for staff in 2011, and further 1.5 per cent increases in both 2012 and 2013.

Benefit enhancements were also included and due to start Jan. 1, 2012

In addition, a single “floating” day holiday in each of the three years of the agreement was included.

The district’s unionized workers voted 97 per cent in favour of the deal earlier in the week.
